Yeah, We've Got a Fee for That, February 2009

Own a Whirlyball Arena?  You owe the City of Fort Collins a $55 fee.  There are fees on just about every type of business.

There are a lot of ideas being tossed around about how to “stimulate” the economy.  Most involve the government spending more money.  What would happen to the economy of Fort Collins if we declared a one-year moratorium on business fees?  What would happen to our construction industries if we had a six-month window where the fees on new houses were cut in half?

How do you create jobs?

Declare, absolutely, that there will be no new taxes, no tax increases, no new fees and no fee increases for the next four years.  It’s time to put money back into the pockets of the citizens of Fort Collins.  Let them spend it, save it, invest it and budget for the future.

This is an age-old script.  Declare an urgent need and then bundle in a load of non-essential programs.  In Washington, they call that pork.
